The Rules of Body Position

As you move through the Active Bodyworks Functional Fitness program you will have a number of exercise principles to follow. Each principle is an important component to you achieving the highest functional fitness level for your body and sport. The more often you apply the rules and principles the easier they will develop and the greater your body awareness will become. Remember the body learns best when under stress.

Before you start each motion always, do a head-to-toe check of your body’s position.

Breathe: Always breathe deeply and fully, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Continue controlled breathing as you move through each motion, Never hold your breath.

Control: All motions require focus on the body’s position. As you make each motion, perform a mental checklist, and attempt to reposition any incorrect form. Each motion performed should be meticulously calculated and controlled keeping the joints in alignment. This will reduce the risk of injury.

Core box: All movements start from the core box, the body’s center. When making each motion the belly button should always be pulled as if you are pressing it to the spine. The shoulders and hips build symmetry and an imaginary box, connecting lines from each shoulder to each hip joint, keep the torso in alignment.  The box and core stay strong and engaged through all movements.

Movement: Connected to the core each movement should be long and extended with joints in alignment from start to finish. The arms: shoulders to elbows to wrists to palms to finger tips. The legs: hips to knees to ankles to toes. From the shoulders to the hips (creating the core box).

Body position when you exercise:

  • Keep head up
  • Keep joints in alignment
  • Shoulders back and down
  • Back straight
  • Abdominals pulled in
  • Breath deeply and naturally in and out of with each motion
  • Listen to your body you should never feel any pain
  • All motions should be large and controlled
  • All motions should be at a comfortable speed

Apply these rules in every day life and you will find your posture and body's movements will improve and flow.
